Basketball Team 1938-39

This is the other picture taken in the old gym (1918-19). Notice the scoreboard on the wall and the wainscoting in the background. That type of wall ran all around the gym. Before this scoreboard was in use, different people used to sit on a little shelf and keep score by hanging numbers on a board. Bob Stull remembers keeping score of a Harlem Globetrotter's game against some of the locals in that way. The Canners were 10-12 this year losing in the final game of the County Tourney to New Market 29-28, as Bud Marts of the Purple Flyers hit two free throws with no time on the clock to win the game.
Kenny Vice finished his third year on the varsity as the high scorer for the year with 172 points. He had a three year total of 248 points. Kenny is shown seated second from the left.
