The Canner team of 1947-48 started with high expectations. The 1946-47 team had won the County Tourney. They had 4 senior starters back plus promising juniors in Dick Williamson, LaMarr Nicholson, Richard Rogers, and Everett Foster on board. The returning seniors were Vernon Ross, Kenyon Roberts, Jim Davis, and Jerry Zachary. Vernon Ross hurt his knee and never returned to his junior form and the Canners never seemed to come together as a team. They finished 12-9 under new coach Jack Hester who had already won four County Championships at New Market. The Canners lost to a very good Linden team in the first game of the County and to Crawfordsville 51-41 in the semi-finals of the Sectional. The Crawfordsville team had seven seniors that year and was good enough to beat Lafayette Jeff, the eventual State Champion. Dick Williamson was the leading scorer that year with 159 points. Vernon Ross had a high game of 19 and ended his three year career with 349 points. The senior starters are pictured here.
